Di Burns - Textile Artist, Feltmaker, Handbag Designer/maker

Di Burns comes from an artistic fashion background. For many years she has designed and customised her own clothing and accessories creating a unique style. Her refusal to conform to being a fashion clone produced daily compliments on her style wherever she went and even led to interest from glossy magazines.

After becoming more and more frustrated at the lack of exclusive desirable handbags without a hefty price tag, Di embarked on learning how to structure and design her own range of luxury handbags and lifestyle accessories.   She studied 3 City and Guilds in Textile Decoration I, II and Feltmaking.  Whilst studying a particular process in Feltmaking she designed her own handbag using vintage silk and embellished it with buttons.  The combination of the soft merino felt, the vintage silk and the creative process was wonderful.  She had found her life's vocation!

The first time she took out her new handbag she was stopped on eight occasions during the day by people asking where her handbag was from. Before the sun had set the first bag was sold and Rubyruby handbags was born.

Di loved to design and make the handbags using colours and themes that inspired her, by word of mouth alone the demand for them steadily increased.  This led to her designing handbags for clients as far away as Australia, Germany and the USA.

The interest became so great that she decided to showcase all her designs in one place and staged an exhibition at a prestigious gallery.  Due to increased demand she recently held her second exhibition of handbags, felt light installations and mixed media art which was excellently received in the creative art community.

The cutting edge design and artisan quality attracts regular features in the press, trade magazines and the glossies.  Detailed images of the handbags have been used on the International Feltmakers global website.  Di's future plans are to exhibit in London, Europe and Japan.

We leave the final words on her amazing journey to Di herself: "In this world of speed and mass consumerism it is enriching to create artisan pieces and the love invested is reflected in the quality of the product.  When you take out your Rubyruby handbag the compliments you receive are like little pats on your back!!"
